In the year 861 AE, during the first antarean war, the United Space Navy destroyed the Worldship Andromedeus. They thought that the entire Andromedeus clan had perished in the conflagration. However, Emperor Lucan Andromedeus III’s family and pregnant daughter had been hidden in secret, along with a small number of the Custodia, the Empire’s special military unit tasked with protecting the Imperial family. The instant they heard the news, a number of contingency plans went into place. Realizing that the Empire would now fall, the Custodia left the core planets in order to find a sanctuary where they could hide from the ULP. There, both the Custodia and the Imperial family set up a base and a life. The base’s location would change twice more during the time they were in hiding. In 957 AE, in their third base, Marius Lucan Andromedeus XIV was born. As per the usual procedure, he was genetically tested, and his code was submitted to the family researchers for comparison against the familial line, they discovered that he was a 99.7% match for Lucan III himself. Many on the base saw this as a sign from Saint Ios himself that this boy would be the one to restore the Empire.

They were right.

The future Emperor was given special private instruction in politics, tactics, military knowledge, and anything else that might help him on his path to restore the Emperor. Despite all this Marius retained a surprisingly humble demeanor. Yet, despite all this training and the hopes of the Custodia, the question of how he would actually regain power weighed heavily on everyone. Then in 973 AE, an agent of the Antarean Federation named Sivon, who had previously been working directly under Thomas Bellmont, made contact with a small group of Custodia who had been planted to keep track of external affairs. Upon further communication he was able to gain their trust and made contact with their main base on which the Emperor was located. Sivon told them of the ideological cracks forming within the ULP and Bellmont’s plans to split of the AF into a power to rival the old Empire. Marius decided that Emperor or not, the people of the Federation were still his people at heart and to allow a war to rip through space without helping was a sin, what was the point of his amazing training if he was unable to use it. So he decided that he would escape the protective arms of the Custodia. His good friend Kera Setorian also came along with him, partially because she also felt that they should go out into the real world and partially out of the protective instinct that was pounded into her during her training to be a Custodia. The two went to Sivon who agreed that he would sponsor their enrollment in the Antarean Federated Lobos Naval Academy. Marius enrolled in the Academy under the pseudonym of Ulric Tovengard in the year 974 AE. He completed his session in the Academy in four years and was sent immediately into the battle that was only just beginning to erupt.

Then in 979 AE Marius’s Hand retreated to the Halifax base in the Urden system. At the time he was a Commander on the Dawn Star. The AF put it’s ships into a tight defensive perimeter but is unable to scramble ships quickly enough. When the USN enters the system, they did so with 200+ ships, compared to the Federations mere 76. When the USN fleet breached the parameter the Dawn Star directly engaged the enemy. Prior to the battle a freak hit on the ship killed the captain, Marius, still under the cover of his false name, takes over the ship. As the battle started to rage around them Commodore Renford Perry took his ship to the front of the combat and was lost. In addition five other command ships were lost. Seeing that unless someone took command all would be lost, Marius hailed the AF fleet and took command. He gathers the remaining arms to him, giving the appearance of retreat. The news services are already reporting a loss when Marius breaks out from behind the base with the remainder of the fleet and decimates the ULP in a surprise counter-attack, driving them out of the system. Ulric Tovengard is declared a hero.

In a massively coordinated and highly surprising event on the Crowning Day of 980 AE, Ulric unmasked himself to be Marius, the heir ans successor to the Antarean Solar Empire. He then calls for a renewed Empire. After DNA testing and much celebrating on the part of the populace he is crowned as the Emperor of the (2nd) Antarean Empire on 981 AE. Taking a mere year to organize and mobilize his new Empire, a year later, on the 400th anniversary of the founding of the original ASE, Marius Lucan Andromedeus XIV declared war on the United League of Planets.
