The DAIS, or Database Interface Sampler, is a portable device meant to be used by both military and private personal and comes in many forms. It has two primary uses: The first is as a direct interface with a central server or computer system. When used in this method the DAIS can be used as a remote control device under either an independent unique interface or a Virtual Control Interface (VCI). In this manner, it’s user can either take direct control over a networked computer or alternately monitor specific functions of a computer or network. If allowed a high enough level of access the DAIS can be used to remotely control all aspects of ship functions or alternatively remotely administer an entire network. The VCI allows the user to even take direct control over any terminal attached to the network. Allowing easier use between multi-lingual groups, it can easily translate information to different languages. The second method of use is as a private computer unit that can be used independent of any network. Each DAIS has varied forms and abilities, however, none have less then a terabyte of memory. Each DAIS, utilizing organic processors with DNA base processes, also has processing power that can easily compare to a private terminal. The DAIS, when used in independent mode, can be used to store files, information, objectives, interface files, and other on-the-fly functions (such as vocal translation protocols). When used in this manner the DAIS can interface quickly and effectively with any other computer system it comes across (assuming security access). There have been known situations in which illegally equipped independent DAIS devices have been used for espionage or other illegal purposes via technology that will allow these devices to break into computer networks. | The DAIS, or Database Interface Sampler, is a portable device meant to be used by both military and private personal and comes in many forms.
Design of the DAIS device varies in sector and purpose. (The interface of a DAIS is easily configured and quite changeable.) All DAIS devices depend on a configurable touch screen as their primary interface.
The ULP issued DAIS devices tend to be plain but highly effective in all manners, including increased processing speed and high memory. These ULP devices tend to be uniformly gray in color with a lack of any sort of decoration. The ULP has the most overt version of the DAIS, it being longer and wider then almost any other DAIS model and not pocket size as some DAIS models tend to be. It is also unique in having the highest resolution on its large Diamond-Plate Display (DPD) of any DAIS device. The default interface is brightly colored and high function.
The AE utilizes a much smaller version of the DAIS device, easily held in a pocket as well as more effective for covert situations. It tends to be more ornate, with a multi-level structure that can be used to house more peripherals for the device. Indeed there are rumors that the AISN holds a few DAIS devices that can be used by drone controllers who can create a direct mental interface. The primary color of ASE issued DAIS devices is dark green. The ASE issued DAIS has the smoothest and most effective DAIS-Network interface of any known DAIS devices and some are even issued with a rudimentary AI or (alternatively) a direct uplink to a fleet AI node. The AE DAIS also has the greatest amount of independence of any DAIS device and relies on a great deal more automation in it’s operating systems.
Other DAIS devices can be very specified to function and user, merchants and private shippers tend to have more ornate DAIS devices, reflecting their class and stature, while some infantry units use extremely simple and hardy DAIS devices in the battlefield.
All in all, the DAIS is an extremely effective device. Employing all the latest technologies, from biometric identification (including easy fingerprint ID software), to ultra-fast wireless network connection. They are perfect for any civilian or military use and are therefore in widespread use throughout the galaxy.
