The fundamentals of the USN Katana starfighter like so many has come from a bid in a previous Iron Angels tournament. While the team was disqualified on two counts in the end; 1, for direct military interference and 2, for flying parts deemed illegal. In so many ways this only made it inevitable that the space navy would be more than interested in the capabilities of the Katana. One of the main advantages is its very atmo capable wings that makes it possible to give direct land support from orbit while still manueverable enough to go toe to toe with Antarean Anti-Air forces.
