The AFN was the only armed force allowed the Antarean Federation in the period following the first Antarean War. Antares' military was severely curtailed by the terms imposed by the embryonic League of Planets after their defeat in the Antarean Cluster.
The AFN was committed to participate thereafter in league peacekeeping operations, being held tightly under over-commanders and being sneered at by league personell. It was little surprise that after decades of belittlement at the hands of their former enemies, the navy exultantly threw off its federation ties and was reborn as the AISN when Marius reformed the empire.
