Contents
The League Greater Defensive Fleet
The LGDF is the most effective fleet, made up of only the most elite of the officers of the League Navy. The LGDF is a mobile responsive force, deployed by order of the Senate in times of emergency to on-site counter-actions. The LGDF is otherwise stationed at key points on the ULP’s borders. The LGDF is divided into ten command units. They are, in order of rank: Alpha Unit, Beta Unit, Gamma Unit, Delta Unit, Epsilon Unit, Zeta Unit, Theta Unit, Kappa Unit, Lambda Unit, Xi Unit. The following is for YOUR EYES ONLY: Classified at level four, is the existence of an eleventh Defense Unit, Omega Unit.
Omega Unit is a special unit under the direct control of the Internal League Security Force (ILSF), in specific the Unit is under the command of the Grand-Marshal. The Omega Unit is composed of both ground and space units and is meant to be the most poignant response against threats that invade the borders of the ULP. It is also meant to be a traveling force to fight against terrorism and to apprehend enemy agents within League space. Omega Unit’s existence is classified, it’s actions are classified and have never been released to the press at large, when possible, knowledge of their actions has been suppressed. In rare instances when Omega Unit’s actions went against the stated policy of the ULP government, its actions have been disavowed and it’s captains demoted.
The League Offensive Fleet
The LOF is the primary offensive force of the ULP. It’s the point force of any League Offensive movement, often, when the LOF is not powerful enough a force, other League units are mustered to serve under the command of the LOF. The LOF commanders are responsible for the coordination of any offensive movement. The LOF is works under the League’s military Admiralty. In times of peace, half of the LOF is stationed in the center of League space, performing war games, the other half is sent on patrol in the League, folded into the LGDF. Ships are rotated through these two stations every three months.
The League Lesser Defensive Fleet
The LLDF, also known as the District Fleets, are the localized defensive force of the ULP. The LLDF is under the command of the District Governors. The fleet is divided up into six protectorate fleets, one for each district. The District Protectorate Fleets are large, each meant to cover an entire district and therefor divided into sub-fleets. All the sub-fleets, regardless of district, are part of a numbered system that alternates between districts. Thus, the first fleet of district one is Fleet One, the first fleet of district two is Fleet Two, the second fleet of district one would be Fleet Seven, and so on. The District Fleets are primarily tasked with the patrol, peacekeeping, and defense of the ULP districts. They are the first response to internal threats and the primary backup for the LOF. The District Fleets cannot take any offensive action without approval of the ULP legislator. In times of peace the fleets patrol their various sectors within their districts.
The System Fleets
>>In addition to the ships and men that the various League member systems contribute to the League fleets many of the systems, especially the prime powers of the League, maintain their own private system fleets. These fleets are under the soul control of the system leadership. Though the League has absolutely no control over these fleets it can request its member nation’s private fleets to render aid, however the member nations are under no obligation to comply. The member fleets are known to have been used during League infighting. When they are not being used the fleets stay on station within their systems, usually in orbit of or near-by their home world.
Livery
USN fleet livery is a standardized affair. The blue-and-grey "camouflage" is of course completely non-utilitarian in a high tech battle theater but it signal the unity of the troops and the planets allegedly. Each fleet has it's own distinctive set of identity "warpaint" set down when that fleet was formed. the greater fleet's markings are simple and bold, whereas the hundreds of system fleets and support fleets sport their own patterns, often influenced by local tradition.
Ship markings are monotone, and their color denotes which group the ship belongs to within the fleet. Squadron markings are limited to approved areas of hull, usually in the group's color. Individual ship markings consist of the vessel's USN standard ship ID, and the individual name of the vessel (although not usually on vessels below frigate size.
In addition to these standard markings, many crews take it upon themselves to personalize their craft, either commissioning one of the many freelance shipfitters or getting really drunk and going on a long spacewalk around the ship with a tank of piped grainers' and a hull surface reapplicator.
Although discreet, tasteful personalization are tolerated and even encouraged, the USN prefers that the appearance of the fleets is dignified and unoffensive. Many young captains have endured the ill-concealed amusement of shipstrip facility staff as they report under their furious commander's orders to have their vessel repainted - often suffering additionally with tremendous hangovers.
