The League is a sprawling political entity covering many hundreds of inhabited worlds, and from each of these worlds it exacts taxes, natural resources and the manpower, to secure them as specified in the League charter. As with any superpower, the sheer size of the League means that, while planetary governments are responsible for providing their own security forces, rapid deployment of reserve forces to trouble-spots is always fairly slow. The debate over whether or not the League should provide for permanent garrison forces for each member world has been an issue of contention for decades. In addition, there are still many that wish to revert back to the system used for years directly following the Unification War, where all armed forces were consolidated under the central command of the League military.

United League Army
ULA.png

The United League Army Operates in a similar capacity to the USN, but on the ground. Though often employed as garrison forces on league worlds, the ULA has limited legal authority to make seizures and for the most part only assist national security forces in their operations.

The ULA

As it stands, military forces of League members are contributed voluntarily, and supplement the standing League Army.

While conscription into the League Army is rare, in some of the further reaching systems, it is not unheard of. Individual system governments are provided only with a quota to fill, which is (ostensibly) tied to their population. Their method of meeting the quota, however, is not regulated.

Manpower is not in short supply for the League. Though volume of incoming personnel is large, the quality is low, mostly due to poor training programs on its member worlds. The overall downside of this process is that, while usually highly motivated, many ULA divisions are inexperienced and fairly unreliable. Because the bulk of these personnel are often shipped out again to help garrison outback worlds, many initially fail to take any threat seriously.

However, the League's strength lies in its tremendous manufacturing base. While the troops themselves may be of average quality, the hardware that they are provided with is solid, reliable, and never in short supply. This has influenced the tactical approach of many League commanders who, given an impossible situation, usually resort simply to sheer firepower and weight of numbers to achieve objectives. As with the Antarean counter part most ULA soldiers wear power armour.

League Regular Forces

The League Mobile Divisions

The 20 LMDs are the front line of the ULA and are traditionally integrated with fleets. They are the best trained of the League regular forces and receive the most combat experience (and casualties). Every LMD has a variety of internal Brigades dedicated to various specialties.

The LMD Recon Brigades

These units are very mobile, using an array of light assault vehicles to surge ahead of the main force and gather intelligence or strike flank objectives.

The LMD Heavy Armor Brigades

These units are equipped with an array of heavier armored vehicles for planetary warfare, ranging from tanks through Quadrupedal vehicle classes. They are the iron fist of the LMDs.

The LMD Light Armour Brigades

These units use light Bipedal Mecha, or Armored Battle Suits, and are intended as a highly mobile firebase to support regular troops and USN actions.

The League Garrison Divisions

The garrison divisions take their name from the world on which they serve. There are many hundreds of garrison divisions; with the ULA providing local authorities with officers and materials.

The League Reserve Divisions

The League Reserve Divisions are stationed on key worlds throughout the League. They are intended both as a visible deterrent and a long term troop resource for various scenarios. 200 divisions in all, the reserves are often treated as little more than canon fodder.

League Special Divisions

League Special Operations Divisions

These highly trained forces comprise the best of the best of the ULA. The recruitment regimes are arduous beyond comprehension, and a waiver is signed upon transfer, absolving the ULA of responsibility for all injury up to and including loss of life in training.

LSO units use only state-of-the-art hardware and have access to the fastest and stealthiest USN vessels. They can be deployed anywhere within the six Districts and within 2 days of an order being given.

The other operations departments are kept under relative secrecy, though their primary base of operations Raikonen System.

All members of LSO refer to their unit simply as "The Division". unfortunately this has led to jealous regular soldiers referring to the LSO members as "Divs", but seeing as most LSO troops can knock ten bells of shit out of even the roughest of the ULA's rank and file, the comments are largely made in private and with much furtive room-checking.

The League Spaceborne Assault Corps

The LSAC or "Hellsacks" are a particularly gung ho breed of soldier whose task it is to secure initial objectives in planetary assault, or capture enemy ships in fleet combat. Various methods of deployment are favored, but mainly breach pods - either space or aero launched - are favored for planetdrop. They are well trained, battle hardened, and are a feared fighting force.
