Summary - ULP has been the dominant power in the galaxy for an extremely long time. This gives them a dangerous sense of safety and strength that is only now starting to fade. They rely on highly structured fleets but more individualized strategies, giving their captains and commanders a lot of leeway and confidence. Their mindset is reflected in their ships. Their vessels are large, often bulky, and sometimes slow. They rely on quantity and quality both, creating massive fleets filled with huge ships with enormous firing loads.

Ships

Their primary large ships are slow to turn, they attempt to make up for this with a wide firing arc but they are frequently vulnerable when out maneuvered by a faster, sharper turning, ship. In order to cover these weaknesses they have developed one man fighters and, more recently, combat mechs in order to protect their larger ships.

Battle behavior

The ULP strategy reflects their mentality. Ships enter battle while firing an extraordinary amount of weaponry, hoping that the first barrage will stun their opponents long enough to get ULP ships into optimal position. When attacking ULP ships have different strategies for different stages after the first barrage. The first is to form deltas and claws with their large ships allowing them to take advantage of their superior range to both attack the enemy and cover their own flanks. They will then attempt to surround the enemy battle grouping, using the smaller ships to clear a spot for the larger ships. (Note: This strategy is only employed if there is sure to be no enemy reinforcements due to its extreme vulnerability). Throughout battle the small one man fighters and mechs are used to eliminate more maneuverable enemies and cover capital ships as they bring their weapons to bear.

Defensive behavior

ULP has frequent experience with defending its borders and knows how to build a good blockade. ULP ships tend to create long large walls (even when this will stretch the defense thinly) in order to block any possible attacks to their vulnerable rear. When attacked the ULP will only give ground if the entire defensive line moves backward, because of this ULP defenders are slow to admit defeat.

General Capital/Large ship strategy

For optimal weapon arcs many weapons are mounted for broadside attacks. Ships will frequently attempt to hang back and take advantage of their long range in order to take down the enemy at a distance.

Small ship/fighter craft/mech strategy

The ULP is strong believers in the ideal that more weapons makes better ships. Because of this their fighter craft are comparatively sluggish turners (though still a great deal faster then the capital ships). Mechs are a new idea (only used by the ULP) giving a Marine mobility in space, boarding and ground. They are deployed because of their quick movements and the fact that they have an easier time bringing weapons to bear. Smaller ships tend to relay on an unusual amount of independence, a product of the ULP ideal. They will pick targets to protect and defend by individual choice, secure in the belief that superior weapons and ships will even out the odds.

The `Antarean Star Empire <Antarean_Star_Empire.html>`_

Summary - Anterians prefer relaying on tricks, numbers and intelligence, over strength, to destroy their enemies. This is less of a choice then it is a requirement. They began with many obsolete and weaker ships. Though they have gained the ability to construct better ships they have continued their reliability on their strategy. Their ships tend to be smaller, more maneuverable and more defensive based. Also due to material shortage.

the fleet is far more dependent on energy based devices and needs to win frequently, lest the ships run out. Ships - In order to feel a large force the Imperial Navy has a huge reliance on AI piloted or aided ships. Since these AI drones have no need of human pilots they can be built far smaller and more maneuverable then most fighter craft. Their larger ships tend to be heavily modified and overpowered vessels with high defensive powers and shorter range weapons.

Battle Behavior

The AISN rely on previously planned, brilliant, but stiff, strategies. They tend to shirk traditional formations, basing their in-battle behavior on swarm tactics, hoping to overwhelm their enemies by attacking from every direction. They work in the field with a hierarchical structure. Their fleet has a hesitance to sacrifice men. Therefore, drones will tend to come out in front and their control ships will hang back, moving in quickly to use their more powerful weapons. There is never any break in AISN skirmish lines for long, the AIs will quickly fill it, making all maneuvers perfect. The AISN supplements this excellent coordination with data on the enemy through frequent scouting and spying.

Defensive behavior

The AISN simply does not have the resources to create huge defensive lines. Instead the AISN relies on guerilla tactics and sabotage. The AISN is never afraid to retreat into the darkness when their men are in danger.

General Capital/Large ship strategy

The larger ships of the AISN fleet are usually kept in reserve for definite and safe surgical strikes. The capital ships have more men and are always well protected. Even their large ships tend to be smaller then the equivalent ULP ships and are more maneuverable. However they do have smaller firing arcs, focusing on the front, for head-on assaults, and in the rear for retreat.

Small ship/ fighter craft / drones

Small craft in the AISN is almost totally limited to their unique AI controlled, super coordinated, drones. The drones and any manned fighter craft are well coordinated, working together with swarm tactics, hoping to overwhelm their enemies with strength of numbers. Due to their small size and AI controllers, drones are able to execute speeds, turns and maneuvers impossible in a manned ship. Drones will often work together to take out much larger ships, reflecting Anterians ideology in group work.
