The First exodus was the initial expansion of mankind from its home system of Sol.
This process was at first a slow one, with Generation-Ships traveling sub-light to only the nearer stars. Then as technology advanced, progressively faster ships were developed that were sent to further and further star systems.
Eventually the distances involved became so great that communications began to suffer catastrophically between the various new worlds, and the far colonies became civilizations unto themselves, cut off from the rest of the human race. Although this dark age only lasted until sub-space communication was rendered practical, the isolation and subsequent consolidation of many of the outposts of humanity eventually led to the foundation of the as we know them today.
