The AFN was the only armed force allowed the Antarean Federation in the period following the first Antarean War. Antares' military was severely curtailed by the terms imposed by the embryonic League of Planets after their defeat in the Antarean Cluster.

The AFN was committed to participate therafter in league peacekeeping operations, being held tightly under over-commanders and being sneered at by league personell.
