The Taurian Confederacy is a proto-typical example of a military state. It is not a democracy and makes no bones about the absolute authority of its totalitarian regime. In fact, the name “Confederacy” is simply a truncated holdover from the early days of the Taurian Alliance of Confederated Worlds (TACW), one of the earliest political and military alliances in the local sectors. In truth, the Confederacy is the holder of the largest military in the ULP. However in the last century it has, for the most part, had its navy and army annexed by the League’s various security organs. Still, the Confederacy clings to its political system and has, surprisingly, successfully resisted forces for democratic change for the last two-hundred years.

Political Structure:

Despite the stifling atmosphere of the Taurian political system, it is a surprisingly effective governing body. Led by a Premier who serves a life term, the ruling council is comprised of close friends, family members, and political advisers. Given the despotic nature of this manner of rule, it is little wonder that Confederated Armed Forces are such a powerful and rigid body. The office of the Premier is more of a military position than a political one, with the council legislating most of the social, economic, and mercantile law in the Confederacy.

War has always been a part of the Confederacy’s history, and it is because of this that the Confederated Navy has been largely integrated into the League’s naval command structure. Though this is mostly in name only, allowing these same units to patrol and protect the worlds of the Confederacy, it also places Confederate forces at the frontline of most combat operations conducted by the League.

Social Climate:

Due to its size and disposition of government and military, the Confederacy has often had economic and social problems. Citizens of the TC have always been faced the lack of representation their government, with a majority of the upper-echelon of management positions being restricted to individuals chosen by the high-council. This has led to an almost oligarchic social arrangement with a majority of the populace being barred from socio-political advancement. As a result, morale in the Confederacy has always been poor. In contrast to this, the military establishment has always been strong, mainly because military service is one of the few methods for social advancement available to the general public.
